I just received one of those bogus emails claiming to be written by David Letterman. It goes on and on, blah blah blah...but the crux of the email is that we should thank god that we live in such a great country and ends by asking "are we sure that now is a good time to take god out of the Pledge of Allegiance?"
The first thing I did was check snopes.com to verify that the email was b.s. Definitely not written by Letterman or Leno or anyone else with a late night platform.
Next, I decided to delve into the history of the Pledge of Allegiance. Turns out it was written in 1897 and it wasn't until 1953, in the height of the McCarthy Era, and it's communist witch hunts, (Goody Proctor is a witch!) that a senator decided to introduce legislation to add the words "under god" to the Pledge of Allegiance.
So let us not pretend that our founding father's wrote the Pledge of Allegiance. Further, let us not pretend that "under god" BELONGS in the Pledge. Obviously, it is just the opposite. It doesn't belong there, it was added to it, way after the fact, during a time of right wing propaganda/fear much like what we are experiencing today, with the word terrorism substituted for communism.
As I've written before, there is a reason for separation of church and state. A good reason. There is a place for religion and there is a place for governing. There is no place for religions governing. Jesus said so.
