Reading Before Bedtime

My seven year old loves to read and he loves hearing stories before bed. For months and months and months we've been reading the Goosebumps series. They're good stories but after months of Goosebumps, I was ready for something else.

In the past, I've made multiple attempts to find good books at the library and bring them home for him. He would generally reject the books and we would continue with Goosebumps.

Finally, I found a book called Jackie and Me. It's about a boy who can travel back in time by holding baseball cards. He loved it. It has baseball, it has baseball cards, it has time travel, it has baseball history, it has American history. Win-win.

So we read all about Jackie Robinson and racism. Then we moved on to Honus and Me. Where we learned about Honus Wagner, the Pittsburgh Pirates, the early days of professional baseball, and a little history of Pittsburgh.

I thought he was enjoying the books but I had no idea just how much. We went to the library the other night and I showed him where the "______" and Me books were located. He proceeded to grab a copy of every title. Last night, we started Babe and Me. On deck, Mickey and Me, Abner and Me, Satchel and Me, Jim and Me, which is Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Abner Doubleday, Satchel Page, and Jim Thorpe.

It sure is fun when you connect with your kids.
